How often should you redesign?

There’s a particular site that I’ve been developing recently, that I just can’t seem to leave alone. Every couple of days I’ll go back to it, trying to fix some niggling thing that’s bugging me or taking it in a new direction altogether.

Now this isn’t a problem, as it’s a personal site, but obviously you don’t usually have this control when designing for commercial clients. Usually you finish the job, hand over the website, and that’s it.

Often I find myself looking back at old sites and wishing I could change something, either in the way they look or how I’ve coded them. There’s stuff I’ve done in the past that makes me cringe now, but I guess that’s all part of developing skills. With personal sites though, you’ve got the luxury of tinkering till your hearts content.

My question is though: “How often should you redesign a site?”

An impossible question admittedly, so perhaps it should be “How often do you redesign your and why?”

Is it because you get bored of the design, or you needed to change the functionality in some way?

Personally, my last redesign was a bit of both. The old site was never designed to be especially scalable and it was becoming tiresome to add new content. That’s something I tried to improve with this version. A site that’s easy to update will be updated more often, and that’s something I wanted to make a priority this time round.

With the Reboot a few weeks back, I’m interested in hearing other peoples opinions..
