Basil Spence Archive Project

Basil Spence Archive Project

It’s rare that a website project comes along with such fascinating subject material, that it’s inspiration in itself to work on.

The Basil Spence Archive Project was such a website.

Basil Spence was a renowned post-war British architect, responsible for many iconic buildings in UK, and abroad. Much of his work was completed in Edinburgh so it held a great deal of personal significance as I’ve spent time in many of his buildings.

The archive project is the result of a partnership between the National Galleries of Scotland and The Lighthouse, Scotland’s Centre for Architecture, Design and the City, and the RCAHMS, with the goal of cataloguing and conserving 40,000 items spanning Spence’s entire working life, from student drawings and early career, through his competition-winning design for Coventry Cathedral.

The website has been created to give a glimpse at the archive material in the form of image and video galleries, as well as background information on the outreach project activity in schools and other community centres around the country.
